Try upgrading to ImageMagick 6.2.7-8, the current release. If the problem persists we'll investigate further.

We installed MagickWand for PHP on our Fedora Core 5 box and the install worked without complaint. We then did a minor edit on your script to define a couple of undefined constants (e.g. filter type) and ran your script. The script ran without complaint and produced reasonable output. We're running ImageMagick 6.2.7-8.

We're using PHP 5.1.4.
