Final Satellite imagery using ImageMagick

Post here to shower the ImageMagick developers with praise or discuss how you could have done a better job if you developed ImageMagick. Or talk about how Photoshop is better than ImageMagick. Even complain about how no one answered your postings in the Users forum. Venting and musings welcomed here.

Final Satellite imagery using ImageMagick

Post by creinemann »

Just wanted to share the final product after using ImageMagick to resize, compress, watermark, time annotate, create and animates gif, and then FFmpeg to interpolate the gif frames into a .mp4
GOES -16 Satellite 348 separate frames, from April 5 to April 11, 2020. This one took a while to process, 1 hour 58 minutes.

I uploaded it here if you want to see it in high resolution:

See here for how I got the imagery with my home-based satellite receiving system http://radiolab.dodgem37.com

Impressive technology, and great result.

The MP4 is actually 151 MB, but worth downloading. There are some glitches, possibly from MP4 compression, eg at 16 seconds and at 33 seconds.

Thanks for sharing!

Several years ago when the Sun was in the maximum activity of its cycle, I made many videos using data from NASA's SDO solar exploration satellite. As you've done here, I used ImageMagick for all the coloring, cropping, sizing, layering, applying time date stamps, creating titles, and pretty much everything but the final assembly of the video. In the final step I used ffmpeg to turn the images into videos. If you're interested you can find my examples here... GeeMack at YouTube.
